The last Mohican! One of the few gems left from the legendary mine in Namibia by the late Alan Roup. Alan was a seasoned mining geologist who had vast experience in gem mining across Africa. In the early 1980s, Alan developed what became known as the Mandarin garnet mines, located in northwestern Namibia, in the Kunene Region, near the Kunene River along the Angolan border.
These mining operations were extreme, as the region is extremely isolated, requiring a base camp, supply airstrip (Cessna-accessible), dug-out housing, roads, generators, and frequent interactions with the local Ovahimba people. Mining was done by open-cast methods: removing overburden, drifting down to 40–50 m into pegmatite stringers using dynamite, jackhammers, front-end loaders, and excavators. Production was modest—about 4–5 kg of cuttable garnet per month. As surface mining ceased, the region remains remote and largely inaccessible. The legacy of Alan Roup’s mines, however, endures through these exceptional gemstones. This trill here is one of the last gems around!
